Digital Literacy

What is Digital Literacy?

Digital literacy is being able to use technology effectively and safely. It means knowing how to operate computers, smartphones, and the internet to find information, communicate, and complete tasks. Basic skills include understanding how to use software applications, browse the web, navigate social media and manage online accounts.

But digital literacy also involves being smart about how you use technology. This means knowing how to spot reliable information online, keeping your personal details safe, and understanding the impact of what you share. Essentially, it’s about making the most of digital tools while staying informed and secure.

Closing the Digital Divide

The ‘digital divide’ is the gap between individuals who have convenient access to and understanding of digital technologies, such as computers and internet, and those who do not. AVS Broadband is committed to closing the digital divide by expanding broadband access to underserved communities and offering digital literacy courses to individuals in those communities.

Group courses providing education about computer basics and cybersecurity best practices are being offered in partnership with the AVS Tech Team. In the computer basics course, participants learn foundational skills that are crucial for accessing job opportunities, educational resources, and everyday services that are increasingly reliant on technology. The cybersecurity course compliments the computer basics course by training participants how to protect their personal information and avoid the pitfalls of threats including phishing scams, malware, and data breaches.
